Common Nouns are words for things, animals, places and types of things in general. Words like Boy, Girl, Mountain, Man and Country are general terms, also known as proper nouns.
Proper Nouns are words which are specific to that something, or someone. They include the names of countries, buildings, historical events, places, the days of the week and titles of books and films. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
Our First Exercise!
Identify all the common nouns and proper nouns.
1. Has Ronald bought the tickets for our trip to San Diego yet?
2. Mrs William's favourite show is Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.
3. I am proud to be a American.
2. The 's in Mrs William's is a possessive noun. We would learn more about it in Nouns(VI).
